Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is named after racer Pierre Veyron, who has won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while driving for the Bugatti. 16.4 stands for 16 cylinders and 4 wheels drive. This exotic supercar is capable of reaching 407 kph (253 mph) with its 8 L 1001 PS engine. If your neighbor swans around bragging about his 253mph Bugatti Veyron, then this Swiss supercar might be just what you need to wipe the smile off his face, because the world’s got a new contender for the fastest road-legal car. The crudely-named “Faster One” from Weber Sports might not have the Bugatti’s dashing good looks, but if you ever found enough straight road to give them both a gumboot full, the Faster One’s claimed top speed of 260mph (420kmh) would see it crawl away from both the Veyron and the SSC Ultimate Aero.

With only 900hp to the Veyron’s 1001, the Faster One lives up to its name by virtue of its superior aerodynamics - which appear to have been achieved partially through a boisterous application of the ugly stick. The price of ultimate velocity? A little over US$1.5 million.

There is a school of design that expounds a philosophy that anything that is designed to perform its purpose to the absolute peak of efficiency is beautiful, and that anything designed primarily to be aesthetically pleasing is inherently ugly for the fact. If that thinking resonates with you, then you won’t find this Swiss supercar as hard to look at as the average person might, because its unique looks are one of the key design features that make it the world’s fastest road-legal automobile.

Super-smooth and slippery, every panel on the 115cm-high Weber Sportcars Faster One is designed for the perfect blend of crushing downforce and total directional stability when it’s covering the length of a football pitch every second. The bonnet is flared over the wheels and dipped in the center, creating a v-shaped air wedge over the vehicle, and it slopes gently up to the flush-mounted windshield to press the front axle firmly down on the road. Even the windscreen wiper gets in on the aerodynamics, sitting vertically against the windshield at rest to present the smallest possible profile.

There are no door handles on the Faster One - they’d be just another thing to catch the breeze. A motorcycle journalist once mentioned he’d consistently get 1mph higher top-speed measurement if he took the knee sliders off his leathers, and he was going 120kmh slower than the Faster One is capable of. Instead of door handles, the Lambo-style switchblade doors tilt upwards at the press of a button. The underside of the car is finished with the same attention to aeros - perfectly smoothly, with a curved, venturi tunnel at the rear up to where the twin exhausts exit.

Like the Veyron, the Faster One features an electronically activated spoiler wing. When the gas pedal’s down, it’s angled to provide maximal downforce, but at very high speeds, it flicks up to a fully vertical position in a 20th of a second when the driver hits the brakes, providing a staggering 4,000 newtons of air braking without building any heat at all in the discs or tyres.

It’s also an exceptionally light car, at 1100kg, which helps its incredible acceleration rate and power-to-weight ratio. The entire aluminum frame of the Faster One weighs only 65kg, and yet the torsional rigidity of the design is such that it flexes only 1 degree under a force of 30 metric tons. In order to perfect the weight distribution of the car, its fuel tank has been split into four and located around the vehicle.

Even with class-leading aerodynamics and ultra-low weight, a car needs a very special engine to get anywhere near 420kmh. In the Weber’s case this means a 7.0 liter V8 with a dry-sump oil system and a belt-driven 1.0 bar supercharger for each of the two cylinder banks. It’s fed through a custom-developed high performance injection system by Magneti Marelli, which offers a set of different injection mapping options accessible through buttons on the Playstation-style steering wheel.

The sequential six-speed paddle transmission sends the engine’s 900-odd horsepower to all four wheels, with a custom all-wheel-drive system determining the power distribution for maximum traction. Up to 36% of the total power output can be sent to the front wheels, depending on conditions. The transmission is racecar-slick, with 50-millisecond shift times between gears - it’s also been designed with durability in mind, which can’t have been easy given the prodigious 1050 Nm of peak torque it has to deal with.

An active traction control system helps the Faster One destroy just about anything at the traffic lights; it hits 100kmh in 2.5 seconds, 200kmh in 6.6 seconds and 300kmh in just 16.2 seconds. Braking is almost as impressive - 12-piston calipers on four 380×34mm ceramic rotors, naturally with ABS, can bring the Faster One to a dead stop from 100kmh in just 30 meters. Then it’s time to spoon your eyeballs back into their sockets.

The Weber won’t be anywhere near as comfortable and refined as the Bugatti - and it cares not a whit, as evidenced by the fact that there’s an option to throw out the leather trim seats for carbon-fibre competition benches with 6-point safety harnesses.

There’s no practical need for a car like this. There’s very little practical need for a roadcar that does a third of what the Faster One is capable of. And that’s why machines like this need to be celebrated; they represent the same thing a Swiss watch does - sheer engineering perfection, sheer functional focus and the conquering of insurmountable technical and physical challenges, to hell with the price. And the Weber Sportcars Faster One certainly has a price: 1.6 million Swiss Francs, or just over US$1.5 million, which is a good US$300,000 more than a Veyron owner shells out.

When BMW introduced the X6 not too long ago, it was touted as a Sport Activity Vehicle instead of a SUV because of its emphasis on performance rather than utility. For the New York International Auto Show, BMW is upping its game again by unveiling the BMW X6 M for the first time to public, driving home the point that its Sport Activity Vehicle is sporty enough to stand next to its better-known speed demons such as the M3 and the M5, which share the same legendary M-designation.

How do you get a 2.5-ton X6 up to speed in a hurry? The standard BMW X6 xDrive50i's twin-turbo V-8 does the trick pretty well, using its 400 bhp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque to propel this X6 to 60 mph in mere 4.8 sec. Now just imagine what the X6 M's 547 bhp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque can do....

BMW engineers extracted more power from the 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine thanks to 21 psi of boost from the twin-scroll turbos that are complemented by a patented pulse-tuned exhaust manifold. The result is a responsive engine with a broad torque band that doles out power linearly with minimal lag. According to BMW, the X6 M can sprint to 60 mph in a lightning quick 4.5 sec.

Reigning in all that power and making sure it's all put to good use on asphalt is the 6-speed M Sports automatic transmission, which is coupled to the xDrive all-wheeldrive with a sportier electronic algorithm. There is even a launch mode available for owners who want to impress the neighbors. Standard on the X6 M is self-leveling air suspension and Adaptive Drive with Electronic Damping Control (EDC) that can lower the ride height for better road-hugging abilities.

Expect the X6 M to show up in the dealers later this fall, likely priced in the high-$80s.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC Concept

While Mercedes readies it new E-Class for its U.S. debut with 6- and 8-cylinder gasoline power, it is launching a trial balloon to see if the public is ready for a 4-cylinder turbodiesel version of its popular executive class sedan. So, at the New York show it introduced the 2010 E250 BlueTEC, a diesel concept designed specifically for North America. This model is powered by a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel which produces 204 bhp and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter reaching its peak between 1600 and 1800 rpm. The diesel powerplant features high-tech features such as high-pressure common-rail direct injection and twin Lanchester balance shafts for smooth operation. The engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.

To meet stringent U.S. emission laws, the E250 BlueTEC employs a particulate trap, two catalytic converters plus an AdBlue urea injection system to reduce NOX emissions. The car is equipped with a 25-liter tank for urea, which is scheduled to be replenished during normal service intervals. In addition to meeting Bin 5 emissions regulations, Mercedes says the vehicle will also meet Europe's even stricter EU6 requirements that do not go into effect until September of 2014. This clean diesel E250 BlueTEC concept is said to deliver fuel economy of 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg highway. Impressive.

2010 Land Rover LR4

We've known it over the years as the Discovery, Discovery II, LR3 and now, LR4. What hasn't changed is its distinctive stepped roofline, impressive cargo capacity and 7-passenger seating, for the ultimate in utilitarian chic coupled with Gobi-gobbling off-road capability.

Like its Range Rover and Range Rover Sport siblings, the sheet metal stays the same, but the LR4 gets its own set of LED-rimmed overlapping-circle headlights, thematically consistent LED taillights, 19-in. wheels, a new smoother front fascia and a two-bar perforated grille. This last item both visually lowers the car and feeds more cooling air to a significantly more powerful direct-injected 5.0-liter engine, based on Jaguar's AJ-V8 family, that replaces last year's BMW-sourced unit.

The LR-V8 makes 375 bhp (a 25-percent increase) with variable timing on all four camshafts, variable valve lift on the intake side and a 2-stage intake plenum, good for a 0–60 sprint of 7.5 seconds. It's coupled to an all-new ZF 6-speed adaptive automatic, feeding power to all four wheels through an electronic 2-speed transfer case. For fording streams and the like, the engine's belt drives are waterproofed, along with the alternator, starter motor, a/c compressor and power steering pump. And a deep oil sump prevents oil starvation, at up to 45 degrees pitch and 35 degrees roll.

The interior has been completely redone, retaining the same basic architecture but with a more premium feel that includes a significant reduction in the number of buttons and controls. The center stack is tilted slightly toward the driver, the Terrain Response selector is now ahead of the shifter, and the steering wheel and its button layout are new. Lower seat cushions have been extended for better thigh support, and LEDs provide subtle ambient lighting at various places throughout the interior.

And yes, that funky asymmetric tailgate continues...odd, but it does give the LR4 some additional character.

2010 Saab 9-3X

Saab's 9-3X served notice at the New York auto show that the Swedish company is ready to take on the likes of Subaru's Outback and Volvo's XC70. Boasting a SportCombi (wagon) body, tougher-looking exterior and a higher ride height, the 9-3X should be capable of some minor off-road skirmishes. Saab also feels the 9-3X will make an interesting alternative for those who are downsizing from a large SUV or crossover.

Developed and manufactured in Trollhattan, Sweden, a part of the world known for harsh driving conditions, the 9-3X doesn't just boast about its toughness: It backs it up, with a 1.4-in. higher ride height and Saab's technically advanced Cross Wheel Drive (XWD) system. Saab's XWD, first seen on the limited-edition Turbo X, is an active system which uses an electronically controlled Torque Transfer Device (TTD) to vary power between the front and rear axles as grip levels change. The rear axle also comes standard with a limited-slip differential.

Should you encounter mud, rocks, loose stones or tree branches during your adventure, new front and rear bumpers, as well as side skirts and extended wheel arches, are covered with a grained, dark gray material that is extra durable. Matte aluminum skid plates (front and rear) and multi-spoke 17-in. wheels complete the car's rugged styling.

U.S. 9-3Xs will come with one engine only, Saab's 207-bhp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. Buyers will have their choice of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

Look for the 2010 Saab 9-3X at dealers by the fourth quarter of 2009, with prices announced later this year.

For the past year or so Bentley's enthusiastic engineering board member, Dr. Ulrich Eichhorn, has been talking about bio-fuels with a zealot's intensity. He also seemed quite fond of teasing the media, dropping subtle hints about what was to come while never actually revealing anything — the automotive equivalent of a glimpse of Victorian ankle.

Now we know why. The Bentley Continental Supersports revealed at the Geneva Motor Show is the most powerful road-going Bentley to date: 621 bhp and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. No wonder Bentley is claiming a 204-mph top speed and zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds.

Yes, but how does a car this powerful fit into a world dominated by collapsing economies and a need to be more eco-friendly? Think of it from Bentley's perspective: This project probably started 24–30 months ago when the words "sub," "prime" and "mortgage" appeared mostly on Scrabble boards. The car industry is imploding, multimillionaire sports stars can't get loans for cars and we're all going green.

Which is where this latest Bentley fits in: The Continental Supersports is capable of running on either petrol or E85 biofuel, or any combination of the two. E85 biofuel can offer a reduction of up to 70 percent in CO2 emissions on a "well-to-wheel" basis, which is a measurement of a fuel's net CO2 contribution to the atmosphere, not just tailpipe emissions. It includes refinement, distillation and transport of the fuel. The fuel supply system detects the blending ratio of the fuel in the tank and ensures that power and torque remain constant regardless of the ratio of petrol to biofuel.

2010 Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA

While there is an outside chance that Alfa Romeo will return to the U.S. through a deal with Chrysler as early as 2010, it doesn't appear that the 2010 Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA is part of that plan. It's a shame, because this diminutive three-door hatchback is primed to give the likes of the Mini John Cooper Works edition a run for its money.

The stylish MiTo looks every inch an Alfa Romeo from its vertical grille shell to the fender vents that echo those found on the 8C Competizione supercar. The rear of the car features a large diffuser and prominent twin tailpipes. That aggressive look is carried over to the front of GTA, which features larger intakes than the stock model. These openings are needed to feed air to the turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine beneath the hood. That powerplant cranks out 240 bhp, which is delivered to the front wheels.

The MiTo GTA also sports a lower ride height and an active suspension featuring real-time adjustment of shock valving to control body roll and oscillation. Another feature is the Alfa D.N.A. system that has three modes: sport, normal and all weather, which adjust the level of stability and traction control intervention as well as steering feel to match driving conditions.

The sporting nature of the GTA is reflected in its interior design that features aluminum-accented pedals and a scuff plate emblazoned with the GTA logo, plus revised instrument graphics, an ergonomically designed sport steering wheel and rubber floor inserts embossed with the same pattern as the tread on the specially designed Pirelli tires.
